What is copyright?
Copyright is the right of the creator of an artistic or literary work (eg a photo or a painting or a piece of writing) to have the right to use and control the use of what they have created. Copyright automatically belongs to the creator (ie the person who took the photograph, painted the painting, wrote the book etc.)
This external link to the IPO website (Intellectual Property Office) gives a guide to UK copyright.

Which pictures are copyright?
All pictures are copyright. This applies to any pictures you come across on the internet, in magazines, newspapers or books etc. The copyright owner may give permission for others to use pictures in a certain way (ie they license the use of them to others), but the copyright is still in almost all cases owned by the creator.

Digital photos don't cost anything to make do they?
All photos cost money and time to make. Digital cameras cost a lot more than equivalent film cameras (many times more) and do not last nearly as long as equivalent film cameras. So they need repairing or replacing much more frequently. And that's without including any of the other costs such as travel, insurance, website hosting, time taken to travel, take, edit and upload the pictures etc.

Can I put some of your pictures on my Facebook profile page?
You may*, but please do the following three things:
1 Tag James as the photographer
2 Become a Fan of James on Facebook
3 Please consider buying something from the site if you have not done so within the previous year. You can always buy something as a present for a friend, team mate or relative if you don't want to treat yourself!
*This is only on personal profiles on Facebook - you may not put any of the pictures on group pages, fan pages, club websites or any other website without permission.
